Substantial development opportunities for the city center of Frankfurt were provided when German Railways completely reorganized the track network in and around Frankfurt‘s central railway station and cargo terminal. AS&P - Albert Speer & Partners submitted a detailed site plan for the development of the former freight area and switchyard of the central cargo terminal. The 90-hectare area was designed to connect adjoining neighborhoods and to create a new city quarter stimulated by vibrant urban life with international flair. The new quarter will offer places for communication, business and culture as well as space for relaxation and recreation. An Urban Entertainment Center, highlighted by the 365-meter high Millennium skyscraper, will link the existing metropolitan core of Frankfurt and the new urban district. 7-story buildings, housing offices and apartments in the upper stories and shops and restaurants on the ground floor, will line a boulevard extending for over one kilometer. The boulevard will be European in style and scale and will lead to the "Europa Garden", a park suitable for a variety of public events and site to a future planetarium. Adjacent to the public park will be an extensive and generously landscaped residential park. Furthermore adequate space will be provided for long-term expansion of the fair and exhibition ground within its prominent downtown site. Incorporation of existing transportation networks and green zones will guarantee an organic growth of this area of the city. The various sectors are intended to develop naturally as integral components of the Frankfurt metropolitan area.
