Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2022 Stockholm, Sweden, 2013 - 2014

In 2013 the Swedish National Olympic Committee likewise commissioned the AS&P/ PROPROJEKT consortium to conduct a concept study for a possible bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. In line with the bid approach, the potential locations of the event venues were in around Stockholm, and in the winter sports region around Åre, 600 kilometers north of Stockholm. Because at the time of the above-mentioned feasibility study the town of Åre had already applied to host the 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships and already regularly stages Alpine Ski World Cup slalom and giant slalom competitions, there would have been positive project synergies with regard to the development and use of event venues. With a view to being a competitive concept, the feasibility study conducted by AS&P and PROPROJEKT takes into account all those aspects that of relevance to the planning in an holistic approach. These include the consolidation of the overall concept, a study of the potential venues, the schematic planning of the competition and non-competition venues, and a study of the transport concept. In January, 2014, however, the bid initiated by Stockholm to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics was withdrawn because in the Swedish population and among some politicians there were considerable reservations and opposition to the bid on account of possibly incalculable cost risks.
